Shepherd is a sculpture that emerged as a by-product of the score-based work Recipe for a Tail. As its title suggests, this score functions literally as a “recipe”: it gives instructions on what materials to use, what processes to follow, and what kind of form to make.
The performance on July 12 presents the final stage of this recipe, not in each performer’s studio, but in a public setting, before an audience. There, the audience will encounter two sculptural bodies made from the same materials and through the same process, yet somehow different, and observe how these two bodies have related and continue to relate to two different sculpture-performers.
Through this, the audience comes to understand that the lives, thoughts, and ultimately the souls of the sculpture-performers are different. And because of this, even the same sculpture cannot help but become different. The idea that the two sculptures are the same sculpture is, in the end, a lie.
