Press Release

Gallery Chosun will host a group exhibition of its exclusive artists titled Break Time from 4 to 23 November2023. The phrase ‘Break Time’, which can be directly translated as ‘splitting time’, is commonly understood to mean ‘rest time’ or ‘break’. This exhibition serves as a brief interlude between individual exhibitions of Gallery Chosun’s exclusive artists.

An artist’s time can typically be divided into the everyday continuity of work and the occasional exhibitions or events. Analogous to musicians, there are relatively short times on stage and much longer, extended practice times. As the audience, we cannot see the artists’ prolonged periods of work; we can only witness the brief moments when they shine. What happens during these ‘extended periods’? One can imagine the daily commute to and from the studio, the labor, skill-building, and contemplation that takes place within. We can envision the refined handiwork, the awkwardness of handling new materials, challenges faced during planned artwork processes, consultations, and the constant questions and considerations about their work. Over time, these moments cause an artist’s work to evolve. Sometimes the changes might be minor, but at other times, they can be significant turning points. While audiences encounter well-curated pieces and narratives during exhibitions, the works from these in-between periods might be somewhat undefined and ambiguous.

Break Time briefly illuminates the lengthy interval that transpires between the exhibitions of Gallery Chosun’s exclusive artists. The exhibition provides an opportunity to peek into the extensive time artists spend crafting their work. Perhaps, reminiscent of how past dance singers had a ‘Break Time’ in the middle of their songs to showcase their dance skills, one might discover a fresh side of the artists or their exceptional dance-like talents during this brief exhibition.
