Artist Sanghoon Ahn is known for his experimental approach to painting exploring the medium's materiality and personal connections to him. In addition to working with traditional support such as linen and canvas, Ahn also paints on comparatively fragile or transient surfaces such as vinyl and plywood. The titles of his works are often deliberately ambiguous, which reflects the artist's emphasis on the neutrality of both the titles and paintings as he told Gallery Chosun in 2020.
Sanghoon Ahn graduated from Jung-Ang University, Seoul, and was a Meisterschüler at Kunstakademie Münster. He has participated in residencies including at Gyeonggi Creation Center, Ansan (2019); Incheon Art Platform (2017–2018); and Residency Kunsthof Dahrenstedt, Sachen-Anhalt, Germany (2015).
On special days, we need a story not to wait alone, to remain forgotten, Gallery Chosun, Seoul (2020); Embrace the Uncertainty, Incheon Art Platform, Korea (2018); Friendly Banter, Salon Artertain, Seoul (2017); No bread grows on asphalt, Kreis Museum, Osterburg (2016).
Veni vidi vici, Plan B Project Space, Seoul (2018); ICI-BAS, open studios, Treptow Atelier, Berlin (2016); Foerderpreis, Kunstahlle Münster, Germany (2014).
