Gallery Chosun Exhibition Preface – Jeong Jeong Ju Solo Exhibition Invisible Light (2019)

Gallery Chosun will hold the solo exhibition of Jeong Jeong Ju, titled Invisible Light, from 31 October 2019 to 22 November 2019. If constructing model buildings and installing cameras inside, visualizing a vacant gaze and reversing the observer and the observed was a primary axis of his original work, recently the artist has been working through numerous variations on this initial area of interest, using sculptural works that incorporate 3D animation, stainless steel, and plastic. This exhibition showcases the artist’s vision to link and fuse the past and present approaches that have defined his work. Through a paradoxical statement of “invisible light,” this exhibition creates a cohesion of new meaning in Jeong’s body of work for the past 20 years, which can be described with the keywords of space, architecture, memory, light, and the means of observation. A series of video artworks featured at one end of the exhibition space create unfamiliar images through their introduction of cameras into the buildings of Gwangju, which bear the remnants of the historic recollection of the Gwangju Uprising and the artist’s memories of his youth. At the other end of the exhibition, a series of anonymous spatial installations, incorporating a variety of materials will be exhibited. Two years after featuring Emerging Landscapes in 2017, Gallery Chosun will showcase the transformation of Jeong and his developing insights into the contemporary world.

About the Artist

Jeongju Jeong explores the interaction between light and space through mediums such as sculpture and media installations. Light becomes a gaze toward a concrete architectural space and functions as a formative element with abstract space. After majoring in sculpture at Hongik University in 1995, Jeongju Jeong attained the title of Meisterschüler under Professor Hubert Kiecol at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf in Germany in 2002. He earned his Ph.D. in Art from Kookmin University in 2015 and has been a professor in the Sculpture Department at Sungshin Women’s University since 2012.
