GROUP EXHIBITION

The online exhibition is guest-curated by artists Yto Barrada, Carlos Garaicoa and Mateo López at a time when collaboration across the diverse corners of the art world is more important than ever. Barrada, López and Garaicoa have selected works by nine artists whose work they follow and support.

The motif of the ladder directly implicates the body and its place within society. There’s the body acting as the makeshift ladder and the body that is balancing on top of it, together co-conspiring in a mischievous act.

_La courte échelle - marks the 4^th edition of In Context, an ongoing curatorial initiative, launched in 2010 in response to South Africa hosting the World Cup and temporarily becoming ‘home’ to the world. A common thread running through each edition relates to the mining of the tensions between place and the body. This fourth edition is an opportunity to view works curated in an unprecedented time when the body has been ‘locked down’, our ‘place’ in the world suddenly restricted to one’s home within a single region.

• The exhibition title is borrowed from Yto Barrada’s 2013 exhibitions at Studio Fotokino in Marseille and at Sfeir-Semler Gallery in Hamburg.
