For his first major solo exhibition with Hauser & Wirth in New York, British artist Thomas J Price will present five towering figurative bronze sculptures alongside a large-scale photographic work comprising 18 separate framed images.
Soaring to heights as great as 12 feet and installed directly on the floor, Price’s figures celebrate everyday people by granting them the grand scale central to Western traditions of monument making, a genre historically reserved for the social, economic and cultural elite. Through dramatic shifts in scale, Price calls into question the canonical roles that art and culture assign to certain bodies, as well as the long-standing aesthetic conventions that underpin representations of power. His photographs likewise challenge the ways in which historical institutions—typically regarded as arbiters of truth—have too often limited our understanding of identity and the socioeconomic mobility of marginalized individuals. Together, the works in this exhibition create an environment where such mobility is truly felt: viewers will able to move through the space to engage the works directly and from all vantage points, positioning themselves within the artist’s narrative rather than merely observing from a distance.
Thomas J Price works across disciplines, predominantly in sculpture, but also in film and photography. Conceptually focused, Price engages with issues of power, representation, interpretation and perception both in society and in art.
