Born in Inner Mongolia, Yu Yang received his bachelor’s degree from the Lu Xun Academy of Fine Art, Shenyang, and his master’s degree from the Beijing Central Academy’s Department of Chinese Painting. Trained in classical Chinese painting, Yu Yang’s solution to understanding and revitalizing this millennia-old art form has been to remove its representational qualities and break it down into its component parts: water, paper, and ink. Yu Yang’s experimental ink artworks, which are both pictorial and three-dimensional, achieve new understanding of space, color, geometry, and form. To date, Yu Yang has participated in numerous exhibitions around China, as well as Japan, and South Korea.
