While Markus Oehlen was studying at the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf, German painting was strongly influenced by the punk movement among many artists of the younger generation. At that time, Oehlen chose a different path than many of his fellow painters, who provoked with politically provocative and satirical figurative painting. Against the trend of the time, he detached his art from social themes and experimented with artistic forms of expression across borders. 'I don't believe in honest painting. I love the mix of photography, graphics, painting and sculpture,' he later summarised his working method.
