Long before becoming an art dealer, Luisa Strina was already collecting art. At 17, she acquired her first piece, a 1948 engraving by artist Lívio Abramo, purchased at an auction. Shortly after the purchase, Luisa was informed that she had paid a very high price for the work. To make matters worse, the professional she entrusted with framing the engraving ended up damaging it, causing a small tear in the paper. She recounts that this first experience could have driven her away from the art market forever.
However, later on, Luisa would begin her calling as an art dealer, decisively contributing to the development of the art market in Brazil over the fifty years of operation of Galeria Luisa Strina, which will be celebrated in 2024. Over these years, her collection has grown and now includes some of the most representative artists of Brazilian and international art from the last few decades.
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the gallery Luisa founded in São Paulo on December 17, 1974, part of her collection will be open to the public for the first time. The exhibition will present some highlights, including names such as Cildo Meireles, Fernanda Gomes, Carl Andre, Jimmie Durham, Francis Alÿs, Mira Schendel, Leonilson, among others. The show, curated by the art dealer/collector herself, along with the gallery’s artistic director Kiki Mazzucchelli and curator/art dealer Ricardo Sardenberg, will open on December 17, 2024. On this occasion, a commemorative book celebrating the 50th anniversary of the gallery will also be launched. The publication, organized by Kiki Mazzucchelli and Oliver Basciano, with editorial coordination from Act. Editora, includes unpublished texts and documentation from five decades of the longest-running art gallery in Brazil.

The history of the oldest contemporary art gallery in São Paulo, Luisa Strina, is mixed with the professional career path of Luisa Strina herself. In 1970 Luisa began as an art marchant for friends and artists such as Wesley Duke Lee, Fajardo, Baravelli, Jose Resende and Babinski. In 1974 she opened Galeria Luisa Strina at Baravelli´s old studio with a well defined strategy: to show the work of national and international artists, both here in Brazil and abroad.
