Press Release
Martin Browne Contemporary is delighted to present a new exhibition of paintings by Neil Frazer.

In the artist’s words, ‘I waited nearly six months for the right conditions to allow me to travel by boat through the arch of one of the Twelve Apostles and closely around the bases of the others. I swam, kayaked and took many boat trips to provide the information and inspiration for this exhibition. The resulting paintings juxtapose thick layers of textured paint against deep recessive spaces created by thin veils of pigment washed and sprayed. A new nature is here created that is at once concrete and ethereal, real and atmospheric bridging the gap between the natural and painted world.’

Neil Frazer’s paintings traverse the terrain between abstraction and figuration. The grandeur and scale of Frazer’s subjects resonates with romantic notions familiar from that particular tradition of landscape painting in which the plight of the adventurous soul is shown in all its ruggedness but also in all its tenderness. Yet Frazer’s dramatic images could only have been made by an artist experienced as an abstract painter and able to bring a 21st Century eye and sensibility to his subject matter.
