Press Release

Kirsteen Pieterse’s new body of work has emerged out of a series of cloud studies inspired by her current residence in Hong Kong. Holding Unknown focuses on the moment of intersection between the constantly shape-shifting and uncontainable low lying clouds and the hard, uncompromising lines of the city’s high-rise architecture. Shrouding by the ever present clouds gives the buildings the illusionistic quality of shifting and disappearing into the grey horizon. It is this quality Pieterse has pursued in her sculptures.

Working with both steel and clear acrylic rods, Holding Unknowns successfully captures the romantic and dramatic urban landscape of Hong Kong while continuing Pieterse’s development of perfectly balanced yet seemingly fragile works that display a dichotomy of contrasting elements. The delicate shadows cast by the sculptures add a drawing-like dimension to the sculptures, further enhancing their ethereal beauty.
