The term ‘decimate’ originates from an ancient Roman military punishment in which one out of every ten soldiers is randomly executed to enforce collective responsibility. In 3D modeling, ‘decimation’ refers to a technical process that reduces the number of polygons to optimize models and enhance data efficiency. In superimposing the two notions, the exhibition exposes the process through which certain beings are diminished and eradicated under the pretext of systemic streamlining and maintenance, ultimately pushing them outside the boundaries of access rights and connectivity.

The exhibition reconfigures the gallery as a multisensory media installation combining 3D animation, sound, vibration and heat systems, painting, micro-displays, and a novella. The new video work Decimate (2026) and its earlier installment 404 (2025) are screened consecutively on a single screen, presenting a continuous narrative of the process in which the desire for connection is datafied and commodified, only to be left as an error. 404 recounts the narrative of a character who seeks solace from Godo within an interconnected environment, becoming increasingly isolated amidst the system’s non-responsiveness; Decimate follows Bagi’s tragic attempt to directly enter the system to escape this very estrangement.

About the Gallery

CAPTION is a contemporary art gallery based in Yongsan-gu, Seoul. Founded in 2023, the space presents distinct visual vernaculars and practices from Korea and abroad.
