Press Release
Martin Browne Contemporary is delighted to present Alkipi, a new exhibition of paintings by Simon Taylor.

Titled after a rugged region near Taylor’s studio, this new series of paintings reflects the artist’s response to the landscape he sees on the regular walks he makes throughout this remote area of Australia. Distant views of the mountain range of Ullumbarru, secluded water holes and waterfalls, silent stands of Ghost Gums, Melaleucas and Acacia trees – all have fed into this elegant series of paintings, each built up in Taylor’s signature abstract style.

Following a residency in Vermont, USA, in 2012, Taylor’s aspiration to break up the picture plane has been resolved in these complex images. Trusting more in his intuition, whilst at the same time concentrating on the smaller details including the colour, density, combination and size of the marks used to construct each image, has allowed Taylor to create this extraordinary series of beautiful paintings that depict the Australian landscape in a sensuous yet subtle manner.
