Press Release
We are delighted to announce Tim McMonagle’s first exhibition at Martin Browne Contemporary.

The exhibition titled Vista Drive is the result of McMonagle’s fascination with his environment in particular with gumtrees which he has been observing over the past five years. When describing these new works McMonagle says of the gumtrees, “Contorted limbs and twisted trunks bring each its own personality, kinetic and stable at once. Its robust strength and its struggle to hold itself together despite falling limbs and an onslaught from the elements...” McMonagle paints directly on to linen with no preparatory sketching and favours a square format for his compositions. His observations of the environment combined with his imagination result in lyrical paintings infused with humour and a distinctive elegance.

Tim McMonagle’s work is found in major public, corporate and private collections throughout Australia. In 2008 he was given the Australia Council Residency, Greene Street, New York, USA and in 2010 he was awarded the Fletcher Jones Art Prize, Geelong Gallery. McMonagle was a finalist in the 2012 Archibald Prize for his portrait of his friend, Michael Buxton.
