P21 is pleased to present 'Wastewater Painting', a solo exhibition by Sun Choi. Despite an extensive past career at non-profit organizations and institutions, this is his first solo exhibition at a commercial gallery.
Choi has continued to explore the nature and the meaning of true art, questioning conventional values and institutionalization of art. Choi's work encourages viewers to reexamine the definitions of valid 'artistic' media and question whether the works of art are always original products of the artist. And in an attempt to invalidate the perpetuity of an artwork, Choi continues to remove the substance of the work.
In Interrupted Voyage, the salt made from North Korean sea water he collected in the north part of South Korea, gets scattered over the gallery space and then gets carried away via the audience's bodies to different places outside of the gallery. By 'sending the salt on a journey', the artist actively attempts to 'erase' the work, embodying the ephemerality of an artwork.
