Press Release

PKM Gallery proudly presents selected artworks by representatives of Korean modern and contemporary art and international renowned artists. For Korean artists, paintings by Yun Hyong-keun whose works are the focal point of Dansaekhwa movement, works by Yoo Youngkuk, who is the first-generation modernist in Korea and a pioneer of abstract art, and paintings by Suh Seung-Won, which played a pivotal role in Korean art history as one of the founding members of Korea’s first geometric abstract group, ‘Origin,’ and the avant-garde movement, A.G., in the 1960s, will be displayed at Frieze Seoul.

Among masters representing Korean Art in the late 20th century, the booth sheds light on the past and the present works in Korean Art by introducing Koo Jeong A, who express her distinctive artistic practice of examining the fragile and ephemeral nature of objects and everyday lives to highlight their poetic mundaneness, Bek Hyunjin, who visualises the attitude towards contemporary life through expressing improvisations where meaning is unbounded in the form of jazzy paintings, Young In Hong, who has been exploring the theme of ‘equality’ in the form of art and has continued to rearrange the hierarchical order of the world, Wonwoo Lee, a artist reinterprets fragments from everyday lives through his unique sense of humour and wit, thus interrupting everyday routine and revitalising mundane subject matters, and Young Do Jeong whose paintings are metaphorical and descriptive, exploring human being’s innermost feelings of loss, pain, and misunderstanding through psychoanalytic interpretation. Furthermore, it presents works by Jungjin Lee who has broken new ground of photograph art with his contemplative works, so the booth reveals the multimedia property of Korean contemporary art.

For international artists, paintings and sculptures by Olafur Eliasson who has taken an active part in the international stage with quasi-scientific artworks which are inspired from nature, art works by Toby Ziegler that transcend the boundaries and differences between creation and destruction, representational and abstract, traditional and modern, original and appropriation reveals his distinctive artistic identity, and Jorge Pardo, who incorporates elements of colour and light to the area of design and architecture and creates beautiful and practical objects of organic forms, will be presented together.
