Suh Seung-Won(b. 1941) played a pivotal role in Korean art history as one of the founding members of Korea’s first geometric abstract group, ‘Origin,’ and the avant-garde movement, A.G., in the 1960s. Suh has visualized a theory he coined “Simultaneity” and has been experimenting for the past 50 years the canvas surface as a place where pure geometric forms and bright palette, shapes and backgrounds, time and space are evenly manifested. While his early works display rhombic patterns with clear borders, his recent works are characterized by blurry boundaries between the forms and overlapping opaque colours, creating a different ambience. Not only has he exhibited solo exhibitions in Korea, but also in Japan, the United States, Germany, Italy, Canada, etc. and participated in international art events representing Korea at the Biennale des Jeunes Paris and the São Paulo Biennale. Suh was awarded the Grand Prize of the Korean Contemporary Artist Award, Grand Prize of the Contemporary Print Award, Grand Prize of the 1st Young Artist Award, the Most Excellent Prize of the 5th Korean Art Grand Prize Award, to name a few. His works are included in the permanent collections of major art institutions such as the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul Museum of Art, The British Museum, Brooklyn Museum in New York, and Sapporo Contemporary Art Museum.
