Contemporary Korean multidisciplinary artist Bongsu Park’s work explores the relationship between new media and traditional art practices such as sculpture, installation and performance. Park collaborates with choreographers–such as Yoomi Ahn–creating intricate compositions where movement is expressed in its purest form, through space, people, sound and editing. Dancers, often a man and a woman, interact in a controlled yet abstract space; their bodies responding to one another are affected by sculptural elements. While in constant symbiosis, the dancers delicately test the existing balance between themselves as well as their surroundings. Bongsu Park’s profound desire to focus on concepts of unity brings her to dissect and rethink the formal and metaphorical lines in human cycles and interactions.
Bongsu Park (b. 1981, Pusan, South Korea) lives and works in London, UK. She completed her MA at the Slade School of Art in 2013. In Korea and Japan, her early interest in photography blossomed to incorporate other media. Her diverse education includes studying at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Bordeaux where she developed her work through a diverse range of media, including video and installation. More recently, she has collaborated with a number of choreographers to integrate dance into her video works as well as live performances, including Platform 1 at Camden Arts Centre in London. In 2019 she presented the performance Dream Ritual in collaboration with choreographer Jinyeob Cha at the Coronet Theatre in London.
