Press Release

The Columns Gallery is proud to present Material Sense, our first exhibition dedicated to virtual-crypto art. The show features thirteen early artistic explorations with Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) from represented artists Han Yajuan, Jeon Byeong Sam, and participating artists Arabelle Zhuang, Ernest Wu, Serwah Attafuah, Shavonne Wong, and Tristan Lim.

Comprising of digital videos, photographs, 3D renderings, and generative art, the selection of artworks explore complex themes of identity and our relationships with ourselves, people, objects, and the world at large. From Zhuang’s morphing landscapes and portraits in remembrance of her mother’s life; Attafuah and Wong’s female characters with sharp highlights, dominating in presence; Jeon’s reduction of national and cultural icons into animated stripes; to the ubiquitous loading bars of Han and Wu stuck in eternal loop; and floating fabrics of bodily imageries by Lim; personal narratives unfold and the distinctions between natural and man-made, interiority and exteriority, subconsciousness and consciousness are challenged.

Individually displayed on flat-screen monitors running along walls, the different works illuminate quietly and create an intimate dialogue with one another, likening the viewing experience to listening in on a private conversation - all the subjects and styles mingling in an approximation of communal spirit. Through this, the exhibition offers an offline journey through the vast and endless virtual world, encouraging you to contemplate and question who we are and the conditions of the world we live in.

In bringing together artists from diverse practices and cultural backgrounds, Material Sense showcases the dynamic uses of blockchain technology as a medium for creative expression and bridges digital and physical realities.
