Press Release

The Columns Gallery is pleased to present Robert Schaberl’s first solo exhibition in Singapore with a series of mesmerizing orbits of gold titled “Central Forms”.

The circle is a universal symbol with an extensive meaning. Circular forms epitomize abstract notions of totality, origin and perfection. They convey nature’s rhythmic pulse that is both fleeting and eternal, and the nature of life that is characterized by ceaseless revolutions of beginnings and endings. In spirituality, they represent the Self, eternity and timelessness.‘Central Forms’ (Zentralformen) continuously challenge Schaberl to discover a perfect combination of materials and forms that engender yet another flavour of unique and meditative. A planet of gold leaf and powder that seems to radiate out of a silent chasm of darkness, 70 layers of acrylic aureoles pulsating in infinite colour variations, concentric abstractions simultaneously discharging both centrifugal and centripetal forces, are just few examples of his brilliant endeavor with Central Forms. It is the idea that has led the artist through a journey of tenacious experimentation from the very beginning of his carrier to this current day.In the recent works of Schaberl, light plays a leading role. Only someone in motion can experience the true depth and full richness of the work, as the reflection of light reveals an entirely different world of colour when seen at different angles. Once the circular form initiates tension between colour and shape, light heightens the visual experience – It is as if we hear a symphony of light and colour that resonate within a solid tranquility.

To Schaberl, it is only through the experience of the viewer that his work is truly realised. As Robert Irwin once mentioned, “to be an artist is not a matter of making paintings or objects at all; What we are dealing with is our state of consciousness and the shape of our perception”. When interacting with Central Forms, it is common to find oneself struck in awe and wonder as all preconceived notions of colour and form begin to dissolve. One might return from a brief journey into the depth of their subconscious, or perhaps be tranced by the concentric rings of colour that is both fleeting and eternal. Though the subjective experience of Central Forms will differ for each individual, the absolute charm of the experience is surely uncontested.
