Press Release

Annie Morris (b. 1978, UK) will be having her first solo exhibition in Korea at The Page Gallery from 30 September to 2 November 2024. Morris is a British artist known for her sculptures, paintings, and tapestries, particularly her well-known Stack series, in which she vertically stacks spherical forms in rhythmical shapes and colours.

This solo exhibition will showcase Annie Morris’s signature ‘Stack’ series, her Flower Woman sculpture, and her tapestry works. It will be composed of pieces that most clearly reveal her unique rhythmic and feminine vitality through vibrant colors and dynamic forms, allowing visitors to explore Morris’s body of works in a multifaceted way.

The ‘Stack’ series, which began in 2014, features spheres in a wide array of colours and irregular sizes, all of which are intricately balanced and stacked vertically. The series, which started from the artist’s personal experience in dealing with the pain of stillbirth, uses these spheres to symbolise a pregnant woman’s belly, representing both the miracle of life and the anxiety that comes with it. The contrasting vivid colours and rhythmic arrangement fill the space with a warm yet powerful energy. The Wall Street Journal described this series as ‘Stacks of Joy’.

Reminiscent of Matisse’s colourful drawings, Morris’s ‘Flower Women’ series highlights her exceptional drawing skills through sculptures that beautifully and simply depict the female body with graceful lines. The steel sculptures, with flower-shaped heads and bodies symbolising pregnant women, also serve as self-portraits of the artist.

Annie Morris is an artist who works across both two-dimensional and three-dimensional mediums. Her automatism drawing extends into her tapestry series through textile techniques. The stitching on linen emphasises a painterly texture that resembles pastels or charcoal, a method referred to as ‘Threat Painting.’
