In this Artist Focus we look at the practice that spans sculpture, relief, painting and installation by the artist Wolfgang Flad. His work dynamically bridges the gap between material, texture, and space.
“Basically, my work is an accumulation of the impressions and sensations that come to me. The essence, so to speak, or an extract. Sometimes also quite banal one to one,” says Flad.
Oscillating between painting and sculpture, his layered compositions investigate transformation, growth, erosion, and the tension between order and organic complexity. Reflective surfaces and richly textured forms invite viewers into immersive spatial experiences that shift with movement and light. By continually challenging how physical objects occupy their immediate surroundings, Flad forces a comprehensive reconsideration of traditional sculptural volume, density, and structural weight.
His undulating, skeletal compositions appear to float effortlessly within the air, effectively erasing the perceived boundaries between rigid three-dimensional structures and fluid two-dimensional planes. This ongoing, intricate dialogue between tangible presence and empty negative space allows his art to actively engage with the voids it creates, turning the host gallery architectural envelope into a living canvas where line, shadow, and material mass coalesce into a singular, cohesive aesthetic experience.
Flad’s meticulous, multi-layered treatment of his surfaces introduces an interactive, ever-changing element to each piece. He continuously alternates between raw, deeply cratered textures and highly polished, iridescent lacquers that catch and redirect ambient illumination. As viewers physically navigate around these complex objects, the shifting light uncovers entirely new depths, hidden color gradients, and striking contours, making the simple act of visual perception a fluid, shared experience.
