Press Release

Armstrong’s debut London solo exhibition presents the artist’s most consistent and uniform body of work to date, depicting dawn and dusk around his native Los Angeles. Taking liberties with colours and values, the artist uses a flattened perspective, extending these landscapes and cityscapes upwards to translate them onto the level surface of a canvas.

“Light and shadow are the most crucial elements of these paintings. Colour also, obviously plays a big part but that is mostly derived from the time of day and the light. As the heat of the day begins to cool off, and the energy of the city slowly dwindles there are subtle changes from moment to moment as the light crawls across the houses of the trees of the hillside surrounding my north-east Los Angeles neighbourhood. In a way, it’s kind of like Impressionism in that these paintings capture those fleeting moments that are intrinsically unique. Unique not only in themselves but also to LA.”

About the Artist

Seth Armstrong’s folk-infused hyper-realism reflects his interest in the Dutch renaissance and California plein air movement of the early 20th Century; he uses oil paints to capture the delicate, crepuscular light of his native LA. Depicting vertiginous suburban neighbourhoods, Armstrong imbues his pieces with a sensitive vitality. He plays with the affecting emotional quality of warm and cold light, sun and shadow, fascinated by the “way brick and concrete absorb light and heat all day and seem to radiate it back into the night air.”
