‘When works of art are presented like rare butterflies on the walls, they’re decontextualized. We admire their beauty, and I have nothing against that, per se. But there is more to art than that.’ – Hans Haacke

Whitestone Gallery from Japan invited renowned architect Kengo Kuma to build a uniquely interesting artistic space in Taipei, which can be considered as the qualitative contrast and collage composition of nature’s ‘bareness’ and the humanistic ‘whiteness’. For four years, Whitestone has introduced outstanding exhibitions of foreign artists. In the fourth anniversary in March 2021, I was invited to curate the first special exhibition of Taiwanese contemporary art, hoping to proclaim the quick linkage between Whitestone and local collections. This will further expand the sincere companionship of the galleries and Taiwanese artists/curators and enter into the new stage of exploration/introduction of Taiwanese contemporary art and culture.

The curatorial theme of this exhibition is ‘Matching of Arts and Walls’, having 18 artists to display in it, including the creators of middle-age seniority since the 1980s, who did the groundbreaking works, blended and adjusted, and created and presented art on the spot. The exhibition aims to highlight the ‘strong’ aesthetic thinking and artistic languages of the 18 artists who ‘differ’ from each other through an open theme. The lively and dynamic appearances of the Taiwanese modern/contemporary art of the past thirty years are all presented.
