b. 1959, United States Minor Outlying IslandsJunceau’s work often passes for ancient in form as it employs techniques of sculptural reproduction like the press-mold, which were already in use in the third millennium BC. His figurative sculptural works borrow the vocabulary of classical sculpture to bring a contemporary twist to the very notion of artistic heritage. His interest in figurative sculpture and more precisely in the “Beseelten” (literally “soul-ed”) in art: from the Pygmalion myth to the fusion of classic and folk art of early 20th century American sculptor Elie Nadelman, have led him to develop his figures based on drawings and on his own thoughts as opposed to live models.
