The young representative artist at the forefront of shifting trends in contemporary art in China, Gao Lei belongs to the Post-80s generation which is more used to the global information society’s diversity in values rather than ideology, and individualistic reasoning rather than collective conviction. Through his works of paintings, photography, installation and mixed media, the artist freely traverses across the boundaries of virtual world and reality, creating a new site of communication and mechanism of criticism. Through non-personified approaches, he also explores how the system of power characterizes the individual way of thinking and regulates the social environment.
