James Bowen is a New Zealand born artist currently based in Melbourne. His work frequently addresses amalgamations of the Gothic as a genre that resituates itself in different spheres of contemporary and popular cultures, operating as a lynchpin that deciphers the socio-political and economic flux of the contemporary condition.

James graduated with a MA from Massey University Wellington in 2011. His work is held in private and public collections in Australia, Asia and New Zealand. Recent group exhibitions include Summer Variety, Kings ARI Studios, 2014; New Acquistions Vol.III, Fort Delta, Melbourne, 2013; Changing Rooms; Peace Love & Storage, Window Space, Auckland University, 2013; Pure Bloom, Gloria Knight, Auckland, 2012 Never Hide, Hongdae, Hongik University, Seoul, 2011. Solo exhibitions include BREEDER OF THE LEECH, 19 Tory, Wellington, 2012. FORCE-MORPH, Enjoy Public Art Gallery, Wellington 2011, Untitled Studio 2010, City Gallery Wellington, Wellington 2010. Recent curated exhibitions include Draw Backs and Christina’s World, Fort Delta, Melbourne, 2014. Recent publications include a contribution towards Claire Harris’ Happy Birthday Lindsay Lohan artist book. His essay Notes on The Deep Web and User Culture was featured in Magasine Vol #2, 2012. His solo exhibition BREEDER OF THE LEECH was profiled in the September 2012 issue of FRIEZE Magazine.
