For 20 years, 120 exhibitions, and 95 art fair presentations, the gallery has served as a vital site for the presentation and discourse of contemporary art. To mark this occasion, Galerie Christian Lethert will open a group exhibition on September 5 featuring works by all of the gallery’s artists, celebrating its anniversary.
The gallery was founded by Christian Lethert in August 2006 in Cologne’s Belgian Quarter, with a program centered on contemporary abstract and minimalist practice. The roster currently comprises 17 artists from Germany and abroad.
The first exhibition held at the gallery space at Antwerpener Str. 4 took place in the summer of 2006 and featured the sculptor Lutz Fritsch. Christian Lethert met him during his time at Galerie Klein in Bad Münstereifel (formerly Bonn), where he worked for nine years as Erhard Klein’s assistant. After completing his business degree at the same time, Christian Lethert founded his own gallery in Cologne. For the youngest gallery owner in Germany at the time, this meant “a fulfillment, first and foremost.”
After 11 successful years at this location, the gallery relocated in 2017 to Antwerpener Str. 52, where its program has since been presented across two floors within the light-filled rooms of a historic Gründerzeit building. The gallery continues to participate in numerous art fairs and collaborates with association, museums, and private institutions to bring its artists’ work to a broad public.
The entire gallery team looks forward to celebrating alongside its artists, collectors, supporters, and long-term companions, all of whom have shaped the gallery and will continue to define its future.
The group exhibition 20 Years Galerie Christian Lethert will be on view from September 5 through October 16, 2026, featuring works by Jill Baroff, Rana Begum, Szelit Cheung, Henrik Eiben, Pius Fox, Lutz Fritsch, Joe Fyfe, Roman Gysin, Tony Huynh, Imi Knoebel, Gereon Krebber, Daniel Lergon, Kai Richter, Winston Roeth, Natascha Schmitten, Richard Tuttle, Alicia Viebrock.
