Jorge Galindo Biography

With an explosive and intuitive painting approach and vibrant colours, Jorge Galindo juxtaposes action painting with one of art history’s most enduring subjects: the floral still life. Galindo’s dynamic, large-scale paintings blend gestural abstraction with elements of collage and a reverence for some of nature’s most vibrant and delicate forms.

Who is Jorge Galindo?

Born in 1965 in Madrid, Spain, Galindo received his training at the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid. During the late 1980s and early 1990s, Galindo became deeply immersed in Spain’s post-Franco cultural renaissance, a period marked by artistic experimentation and blending avant-garde influences. He was particularly drawn to the neo-expressionist movement, finding inspiration in artists like Georg Baselitz and Julian Schnabel. This exploration period led him to develop his distinctive approach, merging the raw energy of gestural abstraction with street culture and print media.

What is special about Jorge Galindo’s art?

Galindo’s oeuvre is marked by a bold, expressionistic style he describes as ‘dirty pop.’ His paintings characteristically feature expressive, gestural marks—splatters, sprays, and swaths of bright colours—that demonstrate his skill as a draftsman and colorist.

Galindo often incorporates discarded materials like wallpaper and fabrics, rather than canvas or other traditional painting substrates. He allows for the qualities of the found materials to inform the painting process.

Why does Jorge Galindo’s art feature flowers?

Galindo’s paintings often feature flowers, riffing on one of art’s most enduring motifs. The gestural, explosive imagery generated by Galindo works on several levels—responding to the floral wallpaper on which he often works, as well as the sublime and astounding qualities of nature itself. The representational image within Galindo’s paintings acts as a vehicle for a more intuitive expression and response to the surface upon which he is painting, if not also the very moment itself.

Who has Jorge Galindo collaborated with?

Galindo has been practicing for over four decades and exhibited extensively, individually and in collaboration with other artists.

In 2019, he partnered with renowned filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar for the exhibition ‘Pinturas em Colaboração’ at the Museu Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso in Amarante, Portugal. This series showcased a fusion of cinematic and painterly aesthetics, where Galindo returned to the floral motif once more in response to a series of Almovar’s enlarged still-life photographs. The images acted as the ground for paintings, where the pair used their hands, feet, and brushes.

In 2021, Jorge Galindo and Julian Schnabel collaborated on the exhibition Flower Paintings, which presented floral paintings by each artist at Vito Schnabel Gallery in New York. While the show did not feature collaborative works, it brought the long-time friends’ work into conversation and highlighted shared artistic sensibilities. The two artists first met in Madrid in 1991 when Schnabel taught a workshop at Círculo de Bellas Artes.
