This exhibition documentary features an expert talk with Annegret Hoberg and Silke Thomas and provides insight into the life and work of Maria Marc, wife to Franz Marc and companion of the Blaue Reiter.
The artistic output of Maria Marc, née Franck and wife to Franz Marc, remains largely unknown even in art world circles. We are thus delighted, with the generous support of private lenders, to present the artist and companion of the Blaue Reiter to a wider audience in this non-commercial exhibition. The exhibition is curated by Annegret Hoberg, former curator at the Lenbachhaus in Munich and author of the catalogue raisonné of Franz Marc’s oeuvre, who has written the comprehensive essay featured in the both German and English language publication accompanying the exhibition.
Maria Marc’s art is reflective of her close contact with the artistic avant-garde in Germany at the beginning of the 20th century. Initially inspired by Otto Modersohn and the Worpswede artists, Maria Marc met Franz Marc in Munich and with him the artists of the Blaue Reiter, whose painting provided the impetus for the creation of her own works. After Franz Marc’s death, Maria Marc largely abandoned painting and developed an intensified interest in embroidery and weaving, leading her to the Bauhaus, where she reunited with Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee, a trajectory that distinguishes her artistic work also as a cultural-historical testimony.
