Mark Braunias Biography

Braunias’ art is characterised by its skilful treatment of line and colour, to express an ironic and subtle commentary on the human condition. His work is informed by found popular and comic art. Braunias studied at the Canterbury School of Fine Arts in Christchurch, graduating with a BFA in 1987.

The inaugural winner of the James Wallace Art Award in 1992, Braunias has regular solo exhibitions and was included in public gallery exhibitions: A Very Peculiar Practice (City Gallery, Wellington, 1995), Gruesome (Robert McDougall Art Gallery, Christchurch, 1999) and The Cartoon Show at the Auckland Art Gallery in 2001.

He completed an Artist-in-Residence programme at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery in 2002, at the Southland Museum and Art Gallery, 2005 and at the Sarjeant Gallery, Wanganui, 2007. In 2010 Braunias was awarded a Fulbright/Wallace scholarship to take up an artist's residency at the Headlands Center for the Arts in San Francisco.His work is represented in the collection of the Christchurch Art Gallery, Christchurch, New Zealand as well as numerous private collections in New Zealand and internationally.
