Nike Savvas' immersive installations recall the optical effects of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, yet the experiential reality of these are always joyous. Working across installation, sculpture, kinetic and light-based media, the Savvas creates works that are never static but constantly redirect the gaze, challenging spatial perceptions and demanding an active participation from her viewers. Trained as a painter, her intricate works draw comparison with optical artist Bridget Riley, whilst transforming the scientific and mundane into formulae for creating works. Music is often transposed into colours, and her palette often derives from the Australian landscape.
Born in Sydney, Savvas gained her MFA Hons from the College of Fine Arts, Sydney, and was the recipient of the Anne and Gordon Samstag Scholarship from Goldsmiths College, London. Her work is well represented in public collections throughout the world, including art museums in San Francisco, Sydney and Auckland.
