Phebe Parisia Biography

Phebe Parisia uses bodily, psychological and emotional responses to external stimuli, creating drawings which encompass submission, control, indifference and obsession. Interaction with the outside world is transferred directly into line and object. Each movement, internal frequency, and psychological reaction is recorded in drawing during the act. Her drawings are representations of solid matter, of carbon, of rocks, of crystals dug from the earth. Parisia creates large-format drawings on heavy synthetic nylon; a choice that she says was both deliberate and circumstantial. ‘The fabric and the pen are everyday, non-status items, weatherproof nylon material drawn over with permanent marker.’

‘It combines the physical protection from outside elements, as well as psychological protection within isolation. Yet the actions within this work are not unique. Repetition and ritual is a universal human action,’ explains Parisia. ‘My actions are constructed within a moment in time that does not describe the past or the future, only the present in which it was created. Each line encompasses all information, rendering representation obsolete.’ Phebe Parisia has a growing reputation for her detailed lineal work that reveals a topology of internal emotion and external experience. Her work is often compared to contour drawings on maps or natural pattern systems, while Parisia calls her drawings: ‘a series of experiences rendered in marks through a stream of unselfconsciousness.'

Parisia will participate in the exhibition, Personal Structures at Palazzo Mora, a collateral event at the 2015 Venice Biennale.
