The Page Gallery presents Up Against the Walls! from 26 August through 10 October in collaboration with Consortium Museum in Dijon, France. Curated by Consortium Museum Co-Directors Seungduk Kim and Franck Gautherot, the exhibition is the first chapter of a global project linking the museum’s past 50 years with its next 50, as it approaches its 50th anniversary in 2027.
Nine artists who have worked with Consortium Museum at different moments each interpret the wall through their own artistic language.
John Armleder and Sylvie Fleury bring their long-standing explorations of wall-based work into this new setting. Nathalie Du Pasquier unites geometric wall paintings and small paintings into a single composition, and Vivien Zhang installs paintings over wallpaper created for the exhibition.
M/M (Paris) fills the corridor between the two exhibition spaces with posters, turning the passage into an immersive image-space. Ugo Rondinone projects a video of his late partner John Giorno reciting the poem thanx 4 nothing onto two facing walls, so that a single voice and two images shape the entire space. Isabella Ducrot’s large-scale paper works, Ángela Ferrari’s monumental triptych, and Jean-Marie Appriou’s sculptures also engage the walls and surrounding space, completing the exhibition’s landscape.
Taking the wall as one of the most fundamental conditions of exhibition-making, Up Against the Walls! reconsiders the relationships among artworks, spaces, and the agents who make an exhibition possible. The Page Gallery seeks to explore the structures of collaboration that allow exchanges among artists, curators, and institutions to become tangible works and exhibitions, and to be sustained over time.
