In his painting, the Berlin artist Pius Fox deals with the abstraction of reality. The mostly small-scale reduced works are created in a painting process in which layers are applied and partly sanded down again or scratched out until the right balance, the right moment of friction arises. Spaces dissolve into shapes and fragments and instead of clear colors Pius Fox chooses a delicate, muted palette. The tension between perspective, depth of focus, and range of colors give rise to works that draw from the past and the here and now. Art historical references, experimentation with egg tempera, which he applies as a primer in many paintings meet documentary material, such as photographs, the artist uses as sources.
