Throughout her twenty-year career as an artist, Shia Yih Yiing has been portraying the world around her through vivid visual stories, often tinged with imaginative characters juxtaposed with the subjects that inspire her.
Though her canvasses are rich with feminine elegance, they carry deeper meanings, whether an oblique and subtle political message as in Happy Birthday NEP! or in her role as a mother questioning the social values of the younger generation’s excessive lifestyle as in her series The More We Get Together. Most of Shia's stories have evolved from her role as a mother, a role that has inspired her to portray herself in varying representations from the personal to the representative as demonstrated by her alter ego.
Hailing from Kuching, Sarawak, Shia Yih Yiing studied at the Malaysian Institute of Art and holds a Masters in Fine Art from the University of Western Sydney. Her work delves into themes of femininity and motherhood, and is often imbued with a sense of playfulness and metaphor.
