Dame Sonia Boyce DBE RA HonFBA is a pioneering British Afro-Caribbean artist, academic and educator who has represented Britain at the Venice Biennale.
Boyce is acclaimed for her boundary-crossing practice across film, photography, print, sound, and installation, as well as her championing of Black British artists.
Born in London to parents from Guyana and Barbados, Boyce showed artistic promise from an early age, encouraged by her teachers to pursue art. She completed a foundation at East Ham College of Art and Technology (1980), followed by a BA from Stourbridge College of Technology and Art (1983). Boyce rose to prominence in 1980s Britain as a key figure in the Black Arts Movement, navigating the intersection of race, gender, and identity within a predominantly white art world.
Sonia Boyce was appointed as Professor at University of the Arts London, holding the inaugural Chair in Black Art & Design, in 2014.
Boyce’s practice is deeply collaborative, examining authorship, cultural difference, and the social dynamics of artmaking. Her early pastel works such as Missionary Position II (1985) and She Ain’t Holding Them Up, She’s Holding On (Some English Rose) (1986) explored personal and collective identity in Afro-Caribbean Britain. Transitioning from figuration to conceptual and socially engaged art in the 1990s, Boyce incorporated improvisation, performance, and sound, often involving audiences and other artists in the creative process.
Do You Want to Touch? (early 1990s) comprised sculptures made from Afro-Caribbean hair, probing bodily presence and cultural legacy. The Audition (1997) staged participatory photography with public volunteers, and her ongoing Devotional Collection (1999–) celebrates Black British female musicians.
In 2022, she was awarded the Golden Lion for Feeling Her Way (2022)—her immersive, award-winning installation for the British Pavilion at the 59th Venice Biennale—which united intergenerational Black female vocalists in improvisational performance.
