Tate Modern is one of the world’s most iconic museums of modern and contemporary art, located on the South Bank of the River Thames in London. Occupying the former Bankside Power Station, the museum’s dramatic industrial architecture—most notably its cavernous Turbine Hall—has made it a destination for art lovers and architectural enthusiasts alike.
Opened in 2000 as part of the Tate network, Tate Modern was established to house the growing national collection of international modern and contemporary art. Designed by Herzog & de Meuron, the building underwent a major expansion in 2016 with the launch of the Blavatnik Building, enhancing its exhibition spaces and visitor experience.
Visitors can explore a vast collection spanning painting, sculpture, video, performance, and installation from the early 20th century to today. Major past exhibitions include Yayoi Kusama: Infinity Mirror Rooms (2021–2024), Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power (2017), and Matisse: The Cut-Outs (2014). Tate Modern is especially known for its Turbine Hall commissions, which invite artists to create monumental, site-specific installations. Artists who have participated include Olafur Eliasson (The Weather Project, 2003), Ai Weiwei (Sunflower Seeds, 2010–11), and Kara Walker (Fons Americanus, 2019).
