THEO SCHOON

1915-1985, New Zealand
Theo Schoon Biography
Theo Schoon was born in Java, attending the Rotterdam Academy of Fine Arts in Holland c.1931, arriving in New Zealand in 1939. A flamboyant Javanese dancer and artist, Schoon was also committed to the establishment of a local modernism influenced by Māori art.

He was commissioned by the New Zealand Department of Internal Affairs to record Māori rock drawings in the South Island (1945-1949), and in 1950 he photographed Rotorua’s mud pools in formalist, abstract images. In 1945 his interest in sketching Māori rock drawings for their significance as works of art was unprecedented by a European artist. In 1952 he studied under the Maori carver Pine Taiapa. A solo exhibition of paintings, carved gourds and prints at the New Vision Gallery, Auckland in 1965 displayed these influences together, revealing Schoon’s foresight. His work has only received serious critical attention for its innovation and importance since the 1990s.

Schoon's work is in collection of the Museum of New Zealand - Te Papa Tongarewa, Wellington, amongst other public art museums in New Zealand.
