Yuriyal Eric Bridgeman Biography

Yuriyal Eric Bridgeman is an internationally acclaimed artist whose deeply layered work explores the intersections of cultural heritage, post-colonial identity, and ancestral line. Splitting his time between Brisbane (Meanjin) and his ancestral homelands in the Highlands of Papua New Guinea, Bridgeman works across photography, video, sculpture, and painting to navigate his dual Yuri (Papua New Guinea) and Australian heritage. He has presented major solo exhibitions and international shows, including Yal Ton at Milani Gallery, Brisbane (2021) and The

Hawkesbury at the Centre for Contemporary Photography, Melbourne (2016). His work has also featured in landmark institutional exhibitions such as The 10th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (APT10) and APT11 at the Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA), as well as contemporary surveys across Europe, Canada, and the Pacific. Across these diverse contexts, his highly conceptual practice consistently engages with tribal custom, masculinity, and the enduring resilience of indigenous systems.

Bridgeman’s work extends into major site-specific projects and collaborative community initiatives that have shaped his international reputation. Centering his practice within his maternal Yuri clan, he forms collaborative studios on-site in Papua New Guinea, working alongside family members and local craftsmen to produce shared artistic statements. Notable projects include his expansive photographic and shield-making series, Haus Man, and recent installations that re-interpret ancestral emblems through contemporary mediums. Often developed alongside cultural elders, these projects explore the poetics of place through living histories. Using customary materials, pigments and symbolic performance, he has transformed public and gallery spaces into contemplative sites that foreground cultural memory, sovereignty and the complex psychological landscapes of one’s heritage.

Yuriyal Eric Bridgeman’s achievements have been recognised through numerous prestigious national and international awards, grants, and residency selections. Highlights include being a major finalist in the 2023 Ramsay Art Prize at the Art Gallery of South Australia and a finalist in the National Photographic Portrait Prize (2020) at the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra. He has been the recipient of significant project funding and New Work Grants from Creative Australia and has participated in coveted international residency programs across Canada and the Pacific region. Bridgeman holds a Master of Fine Arts and a Bachelor of Photography with Honours from the Queensland College of Art, Griffith University, academic foundations that continue to underpin his critique of the ethnographic lens and his individualistic exploration of material memory.
