Press Release

An atmospheric installation that thrums with the sonic and luminous art practice of Tina Havelock Stevens. This exhibition animates unspoken, somatic reactions to our present times. !! emerges from Sydney artist Tina Havelock Stevens’ ongoing interest in the social and environmental rhythms of life and place. It brings together sculptural installation and a new improvised percussive soundscape recorded in the Art Gallery’s monumental Tank space.

Havelock Stevens’ background as a documentary filmmaker and post-punk musician is deeply embedded in her artistic practice, where observation and improvisation serve as guiding methodologies. The starting point for her works is often her drum kit, used variously as a musical instrument, a silenced sculptural object, or a tool for activating spaces.

Led by this approach, Havelock Stevens is attuned to both the physical environments that we traverse and the psychic structures that we inhabit, drawing on the ambiguities of human nature. In her public artworks, performances or gallery exhibitions such as this, she prompts viewers to momentarily connect – with the site and each other.

Tina Havelock Stevens: !! is the second annual co-commission by Artspace and the Art Gallery of New South Wales for the Contemporary Projects series.
