Press Release

As a prelude to the exhibition Vuillard: Intimate Theaters, presented from March 23 to July 25, 2027, this display brings together several recent acquisitions that entered the collections by donation, spanning painting, pastel, and the decorative arts.

This presentation highlights the richness of Vuillard’s practice and how the artist explores the concept of the decorative through a wide range of techniques. Among the works on view are two major overdoor panels designed to complete the decorative ensemble Public Gardens, of which five panels are already in the Musée d’Orsay’s collection, as well as a set of pieces from the dinner service created for Jean Schopfer – a unique and experimental work in many respects that enjoyed great critical success.

About the Artist

Édouard Vuillard was a French painter, printmaker, and decorative artist who painted intimate interior scenes. The artist was a prominent member of the Nabis group in the 1890s, and his works are characterised by rich patterns, flattened perspectives, and a focus on the private lives of his subjects.

About the Gallery

The history of the museum, of its building is quite unusual. In the centre of Paris on the banks of the Seine, opposite the Tuileries Gardens, the museum was installed in the former Orsay railway station, built for the Universal Exhibition of 1900. So the building itself could be seen as the first “work of art” in the Musee d’Orsay, which displays collections of art from the period 1848 to 1914.
