Press Release

For Southwark Park Galleries’ 40th anniversary annual public flagpole, Joy Labinjo has produced a new flag from her Lake Gallery body of work We Are Briefly Gorgeous (2024) that celebrates our local community in her largest London institutional exhibition to date.

The flag depicts a section from the painting Joie de Vivre (2024), and reflects on the ways the local Bermondsey community spend time in Southwark Park. The scene pictured capturing a moment of leisure, pleasure and childlike joy. Labinjo’s practice is centred in storytelling, her lived experience and that of others.

With the world in turmoil, she hopes these works act as a moment of respite and contemplation. Commissioned by Southwark Park Galleries, London, and generously supported by Arts Council England, Tiwani Contemporary, London, Southwark Council Culture Together Fund and OMNI.
