New art fair CAN takes its name from both the acronym for Contemporary Art Now and an Ibizan word meaning ‘house of’.
‘We aspire to be the hosts of the avant-garde of the current scene,’ explained Sergio Sancho, who founded the fair.
This is Sancho’s second fair, having established the UVNT Art Fair (Urvanity) in his home town of Madrid six years ago.
Sancho brought in Netherlands-based Croatian critic Sasha Bogojev to identify and invite cutting-edge galleries for CAN. Participants include Nanzuka Underground (Tokyo), The Hole (New York), Plan X (Milan), and Woaw Gallery (Hong Kong).
‘These are galleries that are situated at the forefront of the emerging world art scene,’ Bogojev said.
He said persuading galleries was easier than he anticipated because of the event’s concept and especially its location.
‘Many people in the art world seem to have some kind of connection to the island that I wasn’t aware of,’ he said, adding that they ‘were ready to go out of their way to work out a way to be part of the inaugural year.’
The fair will take place at the 10,000 square metre exhibition venue FECOEV over five days. It begins with a VIP preview on Wednesday 13 July and continues with public days through Sunday 17 July.
