Chris Wan Feng Takes the Helm at Asia Society Hong Kong Center
The Hong Kong curator joins the city’s cornerstone arts and culture institution as it celebrates its 35th anniversary. Save to My Ocula
Chris Wan Feng has been appointed head of gallery and exhibitions at Asia Society Hong Kong Center (ASHK), bringing with him more than a decade of experience as an independent curator and critic in the city’s contemporary art ecosystem.
Rooted in Hong Kong’s emerging scene, Wan has built and bridged local artistic networks across varied contexts—from regional institutions such as Guangdong Times Museum to experimental spaces like CRASH in Hong Kong. His practice also extends to the art fair sector: at Abu Dhabi Art in 2023, he curated Hong Kong Focus, debuting nine Hong Kong galleries in the UAE.
ASHK president S. Alice Mong notes that, with his deep involvement in the city’s contemporary art scene, Wan will bring ‘a unique blend of structural insight and curatorial vision’ to the institution’s next phase.
Situated on a hill in Admiralty, Hong Kong’s financial district, the complex began life in the 19th century as a British explosives depot. Reopening in 2012 following a major architectural rebranding, it now houses ASHK’s exhibition programme.
Wan’s appointment signals a reorientation for the institution, once anchored in modern Asian masters such as Hoo Mojong and Wifredo Lam, and now pivoting toward contemporary and transregional frameworks.
At ASHK, Wan will oversee the Chantal Miller Gallery programme, presenting three to four exhibitions annually, alongside talks, workshops, and guided tours. His arrival coincides with the centre’s 35th anniversary—a moment for reflection and recalibration as it reconsiders how Hong Kong art circulates and connects within a shifting regional discourse. —[O]
