Asia Society Hong Kong Center (ASHK) is a non-profit arts and culture organisation in Hong Kong dedicated to fostering understanding of Asia’s history, contemporary realities, and global connections through exhibitions, public programmes, and policy dialogue.
Established in 1990 by a group of Hong Kong community leaders, Asia Society Hong Kong Center is one of the key global locations of Asia Society, the international organisation founded in 1956 by John D. Rockefeller 3rd. ASHK operates at the intersection of arts and culture, business and policy, education, and heritage, presenting a year-round programme of exhibitions, talks, performances, film screenings, and learning initiatives that speak to both specialist and general audiences. The non-profit’s activities fold into the Asia Society’s broader mission to ‘navigate shared futures for Asia and the world’, using Hong Kong as a vantage point from which to connect local perspectives to regional and international conversations.
Located on the site of the Former Explosives Magazine of the Old Victoria Barracks in Admiralty, ASHK occupies a cluster of revitalised 19th- and early 20th-century military buildings linked by striking contemporary architectural interventions. Thoughtfully conserved and adapted by Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects, the site weaves together brick, steel, and dense greenery with purpose-built galleries, a theatre, and flexible gathering spaces, creating a singular setting for exhibitions and public programmes in the city. At its heart is the Chantal Miller Gallery, designed for museum-standard exhibitions, complemented by venues that host lectures, conferences, and community events that animate the heritage complex throughout the year.
With a strong modern and contemporary art exhibition programme, ASHK has become a key stop on Hong Kong’s cultural map, particularly during Art Basel in Hong Kong. The Chantal Miller Gallery has hosted landmark solo exhibitions including It Begins with Metamorphosis: Xu Bing (8 May–31 August 2014), which foregrounded the artist’s expansive engagement with language, printmaking, unexpected materials, and installation, and the more recent Homecoming: Wifredo Lam and His Chinese Heritage. Reflecting on the institution’s arts programme in 2013, Executive Director S. Alice Mong noted, ‘Our mission is not just about art, but also to teach Asians about each other through art, through public programming and other mediums’.
Alongside solo shows, ASHK develops thematic exhibitions and curated series that place regional and international artists in dialogue, often realised in collaboration with museums, biennials, and foundations. A notable early example is No Country: Contemporary Art for South and Southeast Asia, presented at ASHK in 2013 as part of the Guggenheim UBS MAP Global Art Initiative, which brought together recent work by 13 artists from across South and Southeast Asia in partnership with the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Foundation and UBS. During Hong Kong Art Week, when Art Basel takes place, the ASHK presents a particularly strong programme, convening key art world figures and partner museums. By weaving together exhibitions and discursive platforms—artist talks, curator walkthroughs, panel discussions, screenings, and symposia—ASHK has established itself as a key site for encountering and thinking through modern and contemporary art in Hong Kong within a wider international context.
Asia Society Hong Kong Center is located in Admiralty, on Justice Drive, a short walk from Hong Kong Park and the city’s central business district. The site’s mix of historic architecture, landscaped walkways, and contemporary structures offers visitors views over the city and Victoria Harbour, while remaining easily accessible by public transport. During opening hours, visitors can explore its galleries, heritage site, and a varied schedule of exhibitions and events.
ASHK presents a dynamic programme of exhibitions that explore Asian and global contemporary art, heritage, photography, design, and history, often foregrounding themes relevant to Hong Kong and the wider region. Alongside exhibitions, the centre hosts lectures, panel discussions, film screenings, performances, and tours that bring together artists, scholars, policymakers, and the public. Many programmes are developed in collaboration with local and international partners, reflecting the organisation’s role as a convening platform for cross-cultural and cross-disciplinary exchange.
Asia Society Hong Kong Center offers a mix of free and ticketed programmes. Entry to certain exhibitions and parts of the heritage site may be free of charge, while selected talks, performances, or special events require registration and paid admission. Details of opening hours, ticketing, and registration are provided for each exhibition or event on the institution’s official website.
ASHK collaborates with museums, universities, cultural organisations, and policy institutes in Hong Kong, across Asia, and internationally to realise exhibitions, conferences, and public programmes. These partnerships support research, curatorial exchange, and dialogue on topics ranging from contemporary art and heritage to business, sustainability, and regional geopolitics. Through these collaborations, the centre contributes Hong Kong perspectives to global conversations about Asia’s past, present, and future.
Information about current and upcoming exhibitions, public programmes, and educational initiatives is available on Asia Society Hong Kong Center’s official website and digital platforms.
