The Arts Foundation Te Tumu Toi this evening announced their 2024 Laureate Award winners. The annual award goes to Aotearoa New Zealand artists for their ‘outstanding practice’ and ‘significant impact’ on their art form and their country.
Multidisciplinary artist Lonnie Hutchinson received the Visual Arts Award.
The award’s selection panel—which included Karl Chitham from The Dowse, Lucy Hammonds from Dunedin Public Art Gallery, and Zoe Black from Objectspace, among others—said, ‘having completed major public commissions in Tāmaki Makaurau/Auckland and Kirikiriroa/Hamilton, it is Lonnie’s work across multiple sites as part of the Ōtautahi/Christchurch rebuild that has helped transform the city.’
Painter Saskia Leek won the Female Arts Practitioner Award.
‘Saskia’s paintings open doors, encouraging us to find the magic and wonder in our everyday encounters. Her works are immediately recognisable—joyful, funny and tender images that interrogate and celebrate painting’s history and future,’ the panel said.
The other 2024 Arts Foundation Laureates are Alison Wong (Literature), Carin Wilson Kahui Whetu Ngā Aho (Design/Sculpture), Claire Cowan (Music), Horomona Horo (Composer), and Miriama McDowell and Victor Rodger ONZM (Theatre).
Each of the 2024 Laureate Award winners receive N.Z. $35,000.
Previous winners of the awards include artists Shane Cotton and Lisa Reihana, novelist Eleanor Catton, and filmmaker Taika Waititi. —[O]
