Shanghai Exhibition and Residency Space Cheruby House Opens with Bárbara Sánchez-Kane

A new exhibition and residency space will launch during Shanghai Art Week this November, positioning itself as a hub where art and fashion meet.
Mexican fashion designer and artist Bárbara Sánchez-Kane, whose work interrogates masculinity through sculpture, performance, and uniform-inspired design, will be the inaugural artist-in-residence at Cheruby House when it opens on 8 November.
Founded by collector Cherry Xu, Cheruby began as a series of pop-up programmes in Shanghai since last year’s art week.
But now it has a permanent home, where it is set to host three exhibitions and residencies annually alongside discursive and research-driven programmes.
Sánchez-Kane’s three-month residency has begun and will conclude with an inaugural exhibition at Cheruby House, marking the artist’s first residency participation.
Located in Shanghai’s Jing’an district, within the former French Concession, Cheruby House occupies a 1939 building designed by the Huagai Architectural Firm for banker and bibliophile Ye Jingkui, who also founded the adjacent United Library to safeguard China’s cultural heritage.
Xu said Cheruby was founded to operate at ‘the intersection of art and fashion, with a commitment to transforming cultural hierarchies and creating new ways of thinking and making’.
Thai multidisciplinary artist Tanat Teeradakorn is next up to join the residency programme in 2026. —[O]
