Lily Stockman‘s alluring paintings are front and centre this season at Massimo de Carlo London in the American artist’s exhibition The Waves (15 March–15 April 2023).

In swathes of soft-hued blues and apricot oranges, Stockman’s restrained handling of colour lends her work a luminous quality that often oscillates between harmony and dissonance.

Works like Slipper Orchid and Blue Morpho (both 2022) recall Josef Albers’ iconic square paintings, while nodding towards the artist’s training in Buddhist thangka painting in Mongolia and traditional Mughal miniature painting in India.

To make her paintings, Stockman drifts from fast, thick lines to gentle, textured strokes. Her brushwork and trademark internal borders create spiritual portals that demand viewers’ contemplation.
