Nicolas Party‘s rise has been stratospheric, and with a growing market in Asia, it was only a matter of time until his bold pastels were to make their Hong Kong debut.
For the artist’s solo show at Hauser & Wirth, Party departs from Chinese philosophy, taking the five elements of the material world—wood, fire, earth, metal, and water—as a starting point. Mountainous landscapes, figures cloaked in meteorites, and woodland fires fill his canvases, illuminating the existence of these fundamental materials in a world constantly in flux.
Born Lausanne, Switzerland, in 1980, Party is now based between Brussels and New York. He has had numerous solo exhibitions at institutions and galleries worldwide since graduating with an MFA from the Glasgow School of Art in 2009, including a major presentation at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts on view until 16 October 2022.
